Tool to Monitor Website Availability

I have had some suspicion about our new website host, so wanted to check that the site was up as much as the old one.

Rather than pay for a hosted service – which is fine if you’re at all serious about your website as a business – they’re not that expensive – I just wanted a free app to run on my server at home, which is on all the time anyway.

Cue Watchdog4, from Watchdog4.biz. It’s clear, simple, easy to set up, is free, and seems to work fine. I’ve not checked if I can run it as a service (maybe that’s the paid version, but that’s not a big deal).

I was concerned about the fact that I’ve no background on it, or the publishers, and that it now has my email login/password in order to send me email alerts. Combined with the language choices of English/Russian, I didn’t feel great. However, I’m running it on a server without any access to personal data, and it passes virus scans, so I’ll see how it goes.
